Tigers and Thunder girls battle to the final buzzer

January 26, 2022

Ipswich avenged a girls' high school basketball loss to North Central earlier this year with a 44-41 victory on January 18 in Roscoe.

What happened was that the score was tied at 40 late in the game and Katie Bierman would then assist Kaylin Onken for a layup and a tenuous 42-40 IHS lead. But the hosts would then go to the free throw line and made their first attempt, but missed the second. And Ipswich was then able to send Bierman to the charity stripe and she made 'em both. The Thunder would miss a shot at the end, leaving Ipswich with a permanent thee-point lead.

Those were points #23 and #24 for Bierman that evening, which gave her a pretty decent chance of becoming the game's leading scorer and she would do exactly that. She included a pair of treys. Next was Quincy Olivier also in double-figures that night with exactly 10 points. Ashlyn Weig and Karli Gohl added four points apiece, followed by those welcomed two points by Onken.

The Thunder countered with a pair of 10-point scorers, namely Brittney Frickson and Jenisa Jacobs. And they obtained five additional scorers.

Ipswich had narrowly obtained a 8-7 edge after a quarter and went to their lockers with a 18-13 halftime edge. The Tigers would manufacture yet another five-point cushion, 26-21, with a quarter left to play and you can see how close things would become down the stretch.

Ipswich totaled 19 baskets that featured those two Bierman treys and ended up 4-5 at the free throw line. North Central would make 16 baskets that included five treys and were 4-11 at the line themselves.

Ipswich obtained 23 rebounds; NC, 30. The Tigers had 15 turnovers; NC, 16.
