Ipswich and Warner battle for football win

September 7, 2022

Ipswich struck first, but Warner had the final say during a typically close Lake Region Conference football rivalry last Friday in Warner.

That opening touchdown would be a 38-yard pass play from Ian Beyers to Colby Sylte with a successful PAT run by Beyers. But Zach Wood answered with a 42-yard TD scamper. Ipswich was eventually able to grab a 14-6 lead thanks to Tyler Hettich's three-yard carry. But the hosts would signal their intentions with a second-quarter TD run of eight yards by Charlie Dulany and a PAT run by Hunter Cramer. That lifted the Monarchs into a 14-14 tie at intermission.

And they weren’t quite through yet. They manufactured back-to-back scoring drives of 14 yards (a pass from Brodey Sauerwein to Wood with a Levi Scepaniak PAT kick) and then a 10-yard run by Dulany to paydirt and another Scepaniak kick. That added up to a two-possession lead by the hosts. But Ipswich's high-powered passing attack was able to shrink their deficit to one possession, 28-20, thanks to a one-yard TD keeper by Beyers. And they were then able to get a huge defensive stop and the football with the scoreboard clock steadily ticking. Ipswich was indeed able to move the football downfield but not into the end zone so weren't able to dent the goalline.

This game took nearly three hours even without a potential overtime and there were costly penalties from time to time on both teams and a timely turnover or two. One of those huge turnovers occurred thanks to a Trevor Heinz interception at his own four-yard line. And Carter Geditz also had a opportune interception that evening as did Tyler Hettich. Coach Hogie estimated that the Tigers were flagged 13 times for some 100 yards.

Meanwhile Beyers finished with a 22-38 passing evening and 315 yards (a new school record). His favorite receiver that evening would definitely become Heinz with 11 grabs, also a new school mark, for 131 yards. And Tyler Hettich earned 61 yards with his five catches. Carter Geditz would contribute 52 more yards with four catches. Next was Colby Sylte with two receptions for 50 yards that included his TD catch. Max Kulesa added one catch of 21 yards. The hosts were 6-17 through the air for 99 yards and added a rushing attack that was led by Cramer with 103 yards and Wood was next at 51.

Beyers, meanwhile, led Ipswich with 59 rushing yards and one TD and Tyler Hettich was next with seven carries for 33 yards and a TD.

Defensively Ipswich was led by Tyler Hettich with 17 tackles and an interception, followed by Carter Geditz with 10 tackles and an interception and Beyers had five tackles. Heinz came up with two tackles and an interception. Warner's top tackler that evening would be Devin Woosley with 10 tackles.

Ipswich fell to 2-1 with that LRC defeat and will next face another league foe Northwestern Area during Gala Day action in Ipswich on Friday.
