IHS Girls win 6B Tourney opener

Ipswich gradually pulled away from Sunshine Bible Academy in a Region 6B girls' high school basketball play-in game on February 20 in Ipswich. The Tiger girls would end up with a 43-29 scoring edge.

But SBA had actually led 7-6 in a defensive-minded opening quarter. However the IHS girls would then own a 20-14 halftime edge and would outscore their visitors 13-6 in the third quarter to gain even more separation going into the final stanza. (Ipswich's largest lead would be by 23 points in the last quarter.) Two reasons were Katie Bierman with a game-high 15 points and Gabby Wald with 11 points, also in double-figures. Wald included one trey in her 10 points and Brianna Geditz added another trey in her seven total points. So that trio of Tigers would actually combine for 33 points.

Marley Guthmiller scored three points while Baylee Kulesa, Karlie Gohl, Kaylin Onken and Anna Nierman would all contribute two points. Ashlyn Weig added a free throw to complete their ledger. The Tigers were able to total 15 accurate floor shots including the two treys and were 11-19 in free throws.

Now for SBA! They were led by Rylee Nelson with nine points and she featured one trey. Lydia Lo, Sadie Konechne and Annaliese Van Zee added four points apiece. Meanwhile, Abby Hinman and Brielle Jeffery would score three points apiece and Jeffery's three-ball was a trey.

The Crusaders would total 11 field goals that included those two treys and they were 5-8 in their free throw opportunities.

The Tigers would utilize 38 total rebounds, led by Onken with six of them. Kulesa and Gohl were each next with five boards. The SBA rebounding effort was paced by Hinman with seven retrieves and their team totaled 35 rebounds.

Ipswich protected the basketball fairly well with 14 turnovers and their visitors totaled 20 miscues. But each team obtained nine steals to help offset their respective turnover situations.
