Safety Day was held earlier this year in Ipswich for youth from Edmunds and McPherson counties, including students from five schools - Ipswich, Edmunds Central, Bowdle, Eureka and Leola.

The camp was open to youth ages 8-13 with counselors provided by the local 4-H programs.

Presenters were from the local EMS, Sheriff's Department, S.D. Highway Patrol, electric company, implements, along with specialized safety equipment from local ag cooperatives.

Youth were given hands-on opportunities to see what happens in a variety of situations. Classes included safety information on power lines, fire, first aid, ATVs, grain bin engulfment, lawn mowers, PTOs, firearms, texting/ drinking, driving and the internet.

A local farmer who experienced a lawn mower accident and was paralyzed for life also spoke.

Youth left the day excited to share what they learned with their parents. They received a swag bag with safety items including sunscreen, hand sanitizer, safety books as well as a book about a South Dakota family's farm accident.

"This was the best day ever," said one camper.
